We are already on a journey to the Connected World of the future, where high-quality, ubiquitous connectivity will soon be as essential as water and air. The Connected Car will form a crucial part of this exciting new world, and will bring the need for a seamless communication experience right across the highways network. Anything less would not only be damaging to the reputation of the vehicle manufacturer and their telco partner, but could also compromise key safety, informatics, and comfort features. Car manufacturers are already beginning to market the communications performance as part of the overall driver experience in mobility, and therefore its reliability becomes almost as important as that of the engine and mechanical parts. But how can they monitor the reliability of the vehicle’s connectivity? And how will they acquire the experience data and performance indicators?
Vehicle manufacturers need access to the relevant data so they can take ownership of the driver experience. This will become even more essential as we look towards 5G and the autonomous car of the future. Connectivity will then become a safety-critical feature as well as being a matter of comfort and convenience. The car itself is likely to develop the means to select its own route in order to maximise the quality of experience for on-board video services, phone calls and Webex conversations. 5G will make it possible to secure a personalized service — where the expected quality and service are known— and also both to deliver and to monitor it.
So how can Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology address this challenge? Using AI in combination with pattern recognition gives the potential to map the travel routes of the subscribers and correlate those routes with their actual experience. By measuring against their KQIs, a scientific model of the road segments that is both driven by and filtered according to those KQIs is created. Uniquely, it is possible to discriminate between moving and stationary users, and even determine which direction they are travelling in. It is also just as applicable to passengers on high-speed trains who are subscribers of the relevant network operator. All of this is achievable without the need for any massive investment in the infrastructure without the need for probes, traces or dependence on GPS data.
As algorithm research continues to develop at a rapid pace, the power of AI – and specifically pattern recognition – is creating a blueprint for the connected journey experience. Moving beyond solutions that merely troubleshoot complaints or address specific problems, advanced analytics that operate on a 24/7 basis are continually monitoring and refining the user experience. This offers an efficient and extremely cost-effective alternative to overcoming the limitations of traditional drive-testing, which will be unable to meet the stringent needs of connected journey optimization.
In the next few years, all kinds of systems and ‘Things’ will be connected — not only highways and cars, but also buildings, and eventually whole cities and communities will rely on constant connectivity in order to function.
